The Drinking Driver Program (DDP) is a 7 week program that gives you an in-depth education regarding high-risk alcohol and other drug choices to assist you in identifying and changing high-risk behaviors.
Classes are held once a week for 7 weeks, with each class lasting 2-2 ½ hours.
- Classes 1-2 are about New York State laws and traffic system
- During the first class, participants complete a preliminary screening designed to identify risk factors for a substance abuse disorder.
- Classes 3-7 are Prime for Life
PRIME For Life® is an evidence-based motivational prevention, intervention and pretreatment program specifically designed for people who may be making high-risk choices. The goal of Prime For Life is to help each participant reduce risk for any type of alcohol or drug problem. It also focuses on self assessment to help drivers understand and accept the need to make changes to protect the things most valuable in their lives.
The Drinking Driver Program is part of New York State’s effort to lessen the incidence of injury, disability, and fatality that results from alcohol and other drug related motor vehicle crashes, thereby reducing the risk of re-offence for an impaired driving offense. To enroll in DDP please visit your local DMV.
Cost of attendance is $225 dollars. This is a non-negotiable, no sliding-scale fee. Once formally convicted of DWI/DUI charges, enrollees must visit the DMV in order to sign up for this course. DMV fees for registration may vary.
Enrollees must then bring partial or full payment to the first scheduled class. Payment is due in full by the 3rd week of classes. If enrollment costs are not paid by this time, students will be dropped from the class and unable to enroll until the next scheduled cycle. The re-entry fee is $50.
Zero absences are permitted during this course. It is a NYS requirement to participate in all scheduled hours. Classes may be made up in extreme circumstances only. (Death in the family, severe weather, etc.) Proof will be required to excuse absences.
